Add a tiny trend chart right inside a single cell, no separate chart object, no extra space needed. This lesson uses the Basic Budget workbook from Excel Foundations, free to download below.

A sparkline is a miniature chart that lives entirely inside one cell, rather than floating on top of the sheet as a separate object the way a normal chart does. That makes it possible to place a trend line directly next to the row of numbers it summarizes, like a quick visual next to six months of budget totals, without a full chart taking up a chunk of the page.
Excel offers three types: Line, Column, and Win/Loss, each suited to a different kind of story your data is telling.

This is usually a single empty cell at the end of a row of numbers, like a Trend column next to monthly budget totals.
Click Insert on the ribbon.
In the Sparklines group, click Line, Column, or Win/Loss.
In the dialog that opens, select the row or column of numbers the sparkline should visualize, like your six months of spending totals.
This is usually already filled in as the cell you selected in step 1. Click OK and the sparkline appears right inside that cell.
Drag the fill handle at the corner of the sparkline cell down, just like copying a formula, to add a matching sparkline to every row below it.
With a sparkline selected, a Sparkline tab appears on the ribbon with color, style and marker options.

A Line sparkline built from this row rises from Jan to a peak at Mar, then trends downward through Jun, the same shape you'd get squinting at a full-size line chart, just compressed into one cell next to the numbers themselves.
All three summarize the same kind of data differently, worth matching the type to what you're actually trying to show.
Use Line when the shape of the change over time is what matters, like tracking spending drifting up or down across months.
A mini bar chart, useful when each period's value matters on its own, not just the overall direction, like comparing distinct category totals.
Shows only whether each value was positive or negative, not by how much, ideal for an at-a-glance "was this month over or under budget" view.
A subtlety that can make sparklines misleading if you don't know it's there.
Each row's sparkline sets its own vertical axis based on just that row's numbers, so two rows with very different totals can look like they have the same size trend even though the actual numbers are nowhere close.
On the Sparkline Design tab, go to Axis > Vertical Axis Min/Max Value Options and choose Same for All Sparklines so every row's sparkline is drawn to the same scale, making size comparisons across rows actually meaningful.
Without forcing a shared axis, two very different-sized trends can look visually identical. Turn on Same for All Sparklines before comparing rows by eye.
Pressing the Delete key only clears a cell's normal content. To actually remove a sparkline, select it, open the Sparkline Design tab, and click Clear.
If the Location Range doesn't match the cell you actually wanted, the sparkline lands somewhere unexpected. Double-check both ranges in the dialog before clicking OK.
A trend shouldn't need its own tiny chart to be visible.
