There are nearly 1 billion Excel users out there and 90% of businesses use spreadsheets, even though many have access to enterprise tools. According to McKinsey in 2023, 70% of analysts rely primarily on spreadsheets even with business intelligence tools.
They are flexible, low cost, familiar, quick to get started, great for protyping and mock-ups, accessible offline and integrate with many solutions. The best part is when done right, they are EASY. Let's not add complexity to the workday for fun.
So why do spreadsheets get a bad wrap? When they are poorly built, used beyond their capacity, and there is a lack of training, it's not good. Using a ready-made template saves a lot of headache.
Obviously, I'm an Excel fan, but there are a ton of other tools out there I use now or in previous roles and below is a sample of the ones I recommend.
